Chad Tracy: The Rockies' New Son
The Rockies traded Greg Reynolds, their number one pick in 2006, to the Texas Rangers for Chad Tracy. Last name sound familiar? That's because he's the son of Colorado Rockies' manager Jim Tracy. Chad Tracy, 26, is a power hitting first basemen/outfielder who has yet to taste the big leagues. He set the all-time record in RBI (109) for the Triple-A Round Rock Express last season, while also hitting 26 home runs. Greg Reynolds, if you remember correctly, was drafted ahead of such players as Evan Longoria and Tim Lincecum in 2006. His pitching has been sub-par, and Coors Field has nothing to do with his failures.
I feel like this is an excellent deal for the Rockies. They might as well try to get something from/for Reynolds, and they did that with Chad Tracy. I like Tracy's power numbers in his minor league career, but his average has never really been MLB ready. If anything, he'll have two of the best all-time hitting first basemen (Helton, Giambi) to learn from in Spring Training. He adds depth to the first base position as well, because we all know that both Helton and Giambi aren't getting any younger. They're a combined 79 years old.
The only problem that I have with this deal is that it's JIM TRACY'S SON! I'm sorry, but I've never felt like Jim Tracy is a strong manager. Tracy sits on the bench and claps occasionally, and then when the game is over he blames the players for their lack of enthusiasm. Trading for Chad Tracy only strengthens the fact that the Rockies are sticking with Jim Tracy even longer than expected. I hope that this deal didn't go down because Jim was whispering into Dan O'Dowd's ear. I swear, Jim has some sort of criminalizing pictures of O'Dowd. There's no way Jim Tracy should still be the manager of the Rockies. I'd much rather see Jason Giambi be the player/manager.
I'm not going to lie, I feel like this was a great deal for the Rockies. Reynolds wasn't living up to a #1 pick, and Chad Tracy has the potential to bring some eye-widening power to Coors Field. My only problem is Jim Tracy. I'm sure that he's nice enough, but I don't see him taking the Rockies to the World Series. Talented players are what got the Rockies to the playoffs in 2009, but poor managing is what lost it for them in the playoffs.
Is there a way that we can trade Jim Tracy for Dante Bichette Jr.? Now, that's one Rockies' son I wouldn't mind wearing a Rockies uniform. I'm sure the Yankees could use ANOTHER bench coach.
